In a district price control committee meeting convened at the Collectorate on Monday, Joint Collector and Committee President B Lavanyaveni underscored the urgent need for measures to curb the escalating prices of tomatoes and onions.
During the meeting, officials and representatives of the wholesale traders’ association were briefed on the alarming rise in vegetable prices across the district. Lavanyaveni noted that the price of tomatoes had surged from Rs 34 to Rs 60 within a span of ten days, reflecting a broader trend of price hikes affecting various vegetables, including onions.
Highlighting the severity of the situation, Lavanyaveni directed the stakeholders to swiftly implement strategies to stabilize prices. Specifically, she proposed sourcing tomatoes from Madanapalle at competitive rates and retailing them at Rs 40-50 in designated Rythu Bazaars across Eluru, Kaikaluru, and Nuzvid.
Emphasizing vigilance, the Joint Collector warned of stringent inspections and punitive actions against any discrepancies observed in vegetable pricing or quality. The meeting was attended by RDO NSK Khajavali, JD Habib Bhasha from the Agriculture Department, DD Rammohan from the Horticulture Department, Ravikumar from APMIP, Marketing AD V Mahendranath, and other officials.
The directives issued at the meeting aim to alleviate the financial burden on consumers and ensure equitable access to essential vegetables amidst market fluctuations.
